My clients, a successful and growing Newcastle-based software company, had taken on an additional floor in their early-90s office building. The space they found was a legacy of the work patterns of previous decades - tired, dated, and divided up into a maze of small stuffy offices unsuited to a modern and dynamic tech business.

I helped them craft a new working concept for the whole floor, stripping out the existing partitions and finishes and replacing them with a free-flowing series of spaces centred upon an open breakout area for informal meetings and social gatherings. A new workspace, the Innovation Lab, opens directly off this, equipped for high-tech workshop sessions.

A windowless lunch room which nobody lingered in was replaced by a bright and modern kitchen opening directly onto the central space, with bar seating and cafe tables as well as dedicated terminals for web browsing.

New open-plan office areas to either side run the full width of the plan, allowing communication between teams as well as dramatically improved airflow and natural light throughout.

The core layout incorporates neat recesses for copiers, servers, coats and supplies, helping manage office clutter. A new accessible shower room, staff lockers and separate changing room with clothes drying facilities help make cycling to work a more attractive option.

A bold palette of bright colours throughout helps enliven and zone the spaces, creating a distinctive and vibrant environment befitting an exciting modern workplace.
