Extending - a family tail

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

*Update: Building Warrant now granted!*

We recently submitted a planning application for an extension to a mature family home in South Edinburgh. The project picks up from an earlier extension built for the same clients in the 1990s which had allowed for a future development to the side, and so represents the next stage in growth and adaptation for a well-loved family home of over 30 years.

The new proposals add a utility room and dedicated space for the clients' three prized flat-coated retrievers and all their storage and living needs, including an outside dog-washing area with external hot tap. Inside, an elongated window with built-in seat and cabinets will give generous views out over the extensive mature gardens towards the Pentland Hills, while providing somewhere comfortable to sit to take off boots and wellies after a good walk.

The new room has been designed to flow seamlessly from the existing 1990s kitchen and dining extension as well as remaining in keeping with the original 1930s villa. Features such as white rendered walls, overhanging eaves and natural slate roofs unite the three successive phases of development. Neil Lambert Architect is providing services from inception and concept design through to grant of Building Warrant.

Update 01.03.22: Building Warrant has now been granted by City of Edinburgh Council, paving the way for construction to start on site in the next few months!
